Very long story short, you cannot subscribe through Apple if you have canceled in the past.
You must subscribe directly through MotorTrend. It is unreal the number of emails it took to get to the bottom of this. The install instructions could be rewritten to address this, or a menu option on the app with instructions on how to deal with it. I subscribed to this app through the Apple App Store. Apple is refunding my subscription. If MotorTrend wishes to fix this, they have my email address.
